The first round of the election of the President saw record election turnout

In the historically third direct election of the President of the Czech Republic, 68.24% of voters voted. Two candidates with the highest numbers of votes will advance to the second round run-off: Petr Pavel and Andrej Babiš. Voters were choosing from eight candidates in total.

From the two advancing candidates, Petr Pavel won 35.40% of votes, the second Andrej Babiš got 34.99% of votes. From the candidates who do not advance, Danuše Nerudová received 13.92% of votes, Pavel Fischer 6.75% of votes, Jaroslav Bašta 4.45%, Marek Hilšer 2.56%, Karel Diviš 1.35%, and Tomáš Zima 0.55%.

“A record number of voters decided who will advance to the second round. 68.24% of voters used their right to vote, the most in the history of the direct election of the President of the Czech Republic. What is also a historical record is the lowest difference between the first advancing candidate and the second one advancing to the second round of the election; it was 22 843 votes,” Marek Rojíček, the President of the Czech Statistical Office, notes.  

Petr Pavel won the highest share of votes in the municipality of Černouček in the Litoměřice area, namely 81.61%. Andrej Babiš had the highest support in the municipality of Milhostov in the Cheb area, namely 84.67%. There was also the highest difference between the two advancing candidates, which amounted to 79.84 percentage points.

“The biggest interest of voters was recorded in the municipality of Přeckov in the Třebíč area and in the municipality of Kaničky in the Domažlice area, where 100% of eligible voters came to vote. On the other hand, the lowest number of voters came to the polling station in the municipality of Zběšičky in the Písek area, namely 31.91%,” Eva Krumpová, First Vice President of the Czech Statistical Office, says.

The last electoral ward was processed on Saturday 14 January at 7:12 p.m. On Monday morning, the results of voting will be negotiated by the State Electoral Committee. After their approval, they will be published in the Collection of Laws of the Czech Republic.
